It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) in a marfu‘ form that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, some poetry contains wisdom, and indeed, some speech is magic.”

“Some speech is (as) enchanting as magic.” From this statement, both the praise and criticism of speech (sermons and lectures) are evident. Some speech has an effect like magic; people are greatly influenced by it. If such speech becomes a means for the correction of people’s beliefs and actions, then it is praiseworthy and commendable. But if it leads to corruption, then it is unlawful and blameworthy.
“Some poetry contains wisdom.” That is, not all poetry is bad; in some verses, there is the expression of truth and wisdom, and through them, people are reformed. In any case, poetry is also a form of speech; good poetry is good, and bad poetry is bad.
