Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah intends good for someone, He grants him understanding of the religion." He (peace be upon him) also said: "Beware of excessive praise, for it is (like) slaughtering."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this blessed hadith, two points are mentioned:
① The understanding of religion (din) is granted to the one with whom Allah, the Exalted, intends good. In this, there is great glad tidings for students of religious knowledge and the noble scholars. For further details, see: Hadith number 345.
② The command to avoid praise, that is, to refrain from praising someone, is given, and it is described as "slaughter," meaning it leads to destruction in this world and the Hereafter. The people of knowledge have said that the praise referred to here is that which is impermissible, based on flattery and exaggeration. Likewise, such praise by which the praised person is at risk of falling into conceit, self-admiration, or showing off, etc. However, if a person is truly worthy of praise, and there is no risk of him falling into tribulation upon hearing his own praise, nor is the one praising seeking any unlawful benefit, then such praise is permissible—just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself praised some of our master Companions (radi Allahu anhum) in their presence. And Allah knows best.
