Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to me: "Do not ask for leadership, because if it is given to you without your asking, you will be helped in it, and if it is given to you because of your asking, you will be left to it (on your own)."

Brief Explanation
Explanation: By "emirate" is meant the caliphate (government) or any of its positions. Desiring it and striving for it is disliked because it is a very great responsibility, and fulfilling it is an extremely difficult matter. However, whoever is granted this position without asking for it should accept it, because when given without asking, it will only be given to one who possesses special capability and competence for it. In addition, there will also be help from Allah Ta'ala, and he will be granted success and rectitude by Allah. On the other hand, the one who acquires it by his own desire will be deprived of Allah's success and rectitude. Indeed, this reality can be commonly observed today: democratic rulers themselves strive for power, even resorting to all kinds of means, lawful and unlawful, to obtain authority. The result is that they are deprived of Allah's success and rectitude, and thus no ruler is proving to be good and successful, because all are deprived of Allah's help and His success.
