938 - أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي سَعِيدِ بْنِ سَخْتَوَيْهِ، بِمَكَّةَ، أبنا زَاهِرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ثنا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِثَلَاثٍ: «أَلَا لَا يَمُوتَنَّ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا وَهُوَ يُحْسِنُ الظَّنَّ بِاللَّهِ»
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, three days before his passing: “Beware! Let none of you die except while he has good expectations of Allah.”

Its meaning is also that a person should always perform good deeds, because there is no knowing when death may come. At the time of death, a person should have hope in Allah’s pardon and mercy, which is not possible without faith and righteous deeds (amal salih). Thus, the meaning of the hadith is the same as that of the verse of the Noble Qur’an: 1:2 “And do not die except while you are Muslims.” (Aal Imran: 102). (Riyadh as-Salihin: 1/405)
