Brief Explanation
Explanation:
From this blessed hadith, it is understood that wishing for death is not permissible, no matter how great the calamity that befalls. Qais bin Hazim says that we went to visit our master Khabbab bin Aratt radi Allahu anhu during his illness; he had been cauterized seven times on his stomach. Then he said: Our companions who passed away during the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam departed from here in such a state that the world could not diminish their reward in the least, nor was there any deficiency in their deeds. And we have acquired (wealth and riches) to such an extent that we found no place to spend it except on dust (i.e., construction), and if the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had not forbidden us from supplicating for death, I would have prayed for it. Then we visited him again, and he was building his wall. He said: “A Muslim receives reward for everything he spends except for (this wretched) construction—there is no reward for spending on it.” [بخاري : 5672]

The scholars have mentioned one wisdom for not wishing for death: it is contrary to the patience that a Muslim servant has been commanded to observe, and for which he has been given glad tidings of a great reward. Another wisdom is that a long life is better for a believer, because the more good deeds he performs, the higher his ranks will be, his sins will be forgiven, and he will have the opportunity to repent. Thus, it is mentioned in the hadith: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “No one’s deeds will admit him to Paradise.” The noble Companions radi Allahu anhum asked: O Messenger of Allah! Not even yours? He replied: “No, not even mine, except that Allah bestows me with His grace and mercy. Therefore, be moderate in your deeds and try to come close (to perfection), and none of you should wish for death, for if he is righteous, it is hoped that his good deeds will increase, and if he is sinful, perhaps he may repent.” [بخاري : 5673]

From some ahadith, it is permissible to wish for martyrdom, or to wish to die in a sacred place, or to supplicate for death out of fear of religious calamity or harm to the religion. And Allah knows best.
