Brief Explanation
Explanation: This detailed incident is as follows: a certain companion (sahabi) picked up another man's quiver and hid it in order to joke with him. When that man looked for it, he found it missing, and thus became distressed. Seeing this, his companions began to laugh. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam arrived and asked: "Why are you laughing?" The people said: "By Allah! We only picked up so-and-so's quiver to joke with him, but he became distressed by it." Upon this, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim to frighten (or distress) another Muslim." [شرح مشكل الآثار : 1625 ، وسنده حسن]
From this incident, it is understood that it is not permissible to frighten anyone even in jest, because it is entirely possible that from being frightened, he may die or fall ill. Only that kind of good-natured humor is permissible which does not cause anyone distress.
