Brief Explanation
Explanation: From this blessed hadith, it is understood that it is not permissible for Muslims to sever relations with one another for more than three days; up to three days there is concession, but if they continue to harbor resentment after that, they will be sinful. The act of greeting (salam) ends the severance of relations, but if one person, with the intention of reconciliation, says salam and the other does not reply, then the one who offered salam will be absolved of sin, and all the sin will be upon the other person. As it is mentioned in the hadith: "It is not permissible for a Muslim to sever relations with his Muslim brother for more than three days, such that when they meet, this one turns away from him and that one turns away from him. The better of the two is the one who initiates the salam." [مسلم : 2560]
Another hadith states that it is not permissible for a Muslim to sever relations with another Muslim for more than three days (therefore, it is necessary that) when he meets him, he should say salam to him, three times; if he does not reply any of those times, then the one who does not reply will be sinful." [أبو داود : 4913وسنده حسن]
How great a sin is it to sever relations for more than three days? It is stated: "Whoever severs relations for more than three days and dies (in that state), he will enter the Fire." [أبو داود : 4914 ، وسنده صحيح]
In another hadith it is stated: "Whoever severs relations with his brother for a year, it is as if he has shed his blood." [أبو داود : 3915 ، وسنده حسن]
It is stated: "Every Monday and Thursday, the doors of Paradise are opened, and every person who does not associate partners with Allah is granted forgiveness, except for two people between whom there is severance of relations; it is said: 'Give them respite until they reconcile.'" [مسلم : 2565]
It should be remembered that if the basis of severance is for the sake of Allah, then this warning does not apply to it. And Allah knows best.
