Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Malik al-Dar reports that Ziyad came to visit Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness. Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Ziyad! Fear Allah, for the evil of rulers is a destructive thing. Ziyad said to him: You are among the lowest of the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him). He replied: There was no one lowly among the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him). O Ziyad! Shall I not tell you something which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? He said: Why not (tell me), but do not attribute a lie to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said: If (hypothetically) I were to lie about any ordinary person, I would still never lie about the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "Any ruler who spends the night deceiving his people, the fragrance and breeze of Paradise will be forbidden to him, even though its fragrance comes from a distance of seventy years." The narrator says that Ziyad said to him: Ask me for whatever you wish. He said: I only ask you that you neither benefit me nor harm me; if I fall ill, do not come to visit me, and if I die, do not attend my funeral. The narrator says that only a few nights had passed when he (Abdullah) passed away. Ziyad saw people crowding around his funeral. He said: Who is this? The people said: Abdullah bin Mughaffal. He said: By Allah! If he had not asked me not to attend his funeral, I would certainly have attended it.

Brief Explanation
Explanation: -

In these ahadith, a severe warning has been stated regarding rulers who betray and deceive their subjects and the general public. Betraying and deceiving the public means oppressing them, lying to them, violating their rights, not implementing the rulings of Shari‘ah upon them, not fighting their enemies, and so on. For such oppressive rulers, Allah has made Paradise forbidden; they will not even smell its fragrance.
