Hadith 737

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Look at those who are below you and do not look at those who are above you, for this is more appropriate so that you do not consider any of Allah's blessings upon you as insignificant."

Brief Explanation
Explanation: -
This blessed hadith is comprehensive of all meanings of goodness. From it, it becomes clear that in worldly matters, a person should always compare his condition to that of someone less fortunate than himself. This develops asceticism (zuhd) in one’s nature, and greed and covetousness are eliminated. When a servant reflects upon the condition of someone less than himself, more of Allah Ta’ala’s blessings become apparent to him, and then he will be patient and grateful, recognizing that Allah has kept him in a better state than that person. He will never think that Allah has given him fewer blessings. In this way, he will attain the wealth of asceticism (zuhd) and contentment (qana‘ah).

However, if he looks towards those above him, then diseases such as greed, avarice, covetousness, and envy will arise, and a constant anxiety and burning will persist in his nature. Yes, in religious matters, the command is the opposite: there, one should look towards those of a higher rank. Because when a servant worships his Lord and strives in it, if he looks at the person who worships more, he will certainly desire to worship even more than him, or at least as much as him. In this way, he will remain engaged in seeking nearness to his Lord.
