Hadith 728

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Mawraq 'Ajli that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to visit Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill. Salman began to weep, so they said to him: O Abu 'Abdullah! What has made you weep? He said: This covenant which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took from us, but none of us has fulfilled it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said . . . . . and he narrated: "Each of you should have in this world only as much provision and share as a rider carries in his journey."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
This hadith teaches detachment from the world and concern for the Hereafter—that instead of constantly chasing after worldly things, one should be mindful of the Hereafter. It is permissible to take from the worldly possessions (mata‘ al-dunya) only as much as is necessary to keep the wheel of life turning; taking more than this is a burden. When a traveler sets out on a journey, he only takes with him what he needs; if he takes more than necessary, he will be afflicted with hardship. Since this world is also a travelers’ inn, and every person here is a traveler, therefore, one should acquire only as much wealth through lawful means as is sufficient for his subsistence, but he should not make this wealth the purpose of his life, for the true purpose of life is the worship of Allah Ta‘ala.
