Brief Explanation
Explanation: - From this hadith, it is understood that if a person's own family members are in need and destitute, he should first fulfill their needs and then give to others outside, provided that these are legitimate needs and not illegitimate or frivolous matters. This is because spending wealth on the legitimate needs of one's own family is also an act of virtue and charity (sadaqah). Giving to others while one's own family is in need is neither a commendable act nor wisdom. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "The best dinar is the one a man spends on his family, and the dinar he spends on his animal kept for striving in the way of Allah (jihad fi sabilillah), and the dinar he spends on his (mujahid) companions in the way of Allah." The narrator of the hadith, Abu Qilabah, says that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam began with the family. He further says: Who will have a greater reward than the one who spends on his small children? Allah ta'ala benefits and enriches those children because of that person. [مسلم : 994]
In another hadith it is stated: "One dinar is that which you spend in the way of Allah, and one dinar is that which you spend to free a slave, and one dinar is that which you give as charity to a poor person, and one dinar is that which you spend on your family. Of all these, the one that brings the greatest reward is the dinar you spend on your family." [مسلم : 995]
Similarly, in another hadith it is mentioned that when a Muslim spends on his family with the intention of pleasing Allah and seeking reward, it is charity (sadaqah) for him. [بخاري : 55]
Once, a man said: I have one dinar (where should I spend it)? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Spend it on yourself." He said: And I have another? He replied: "Spend it on your children." He said: I have another? He replied: "Spend it on your family." He said: I have another? He replied: "Spend it on your servant." He said: And I have yet another? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Then you know best (where to spend it)." [أبو داود : 1991 ، وابن ماجه : 1844 ، وسنده حسن]
