Hadith 597

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Day of Judgment has drawn near, and people are increasing in their greed for the world, and their distance (from Allah) is only increasing."

Brief Explanation
Explanation: -
The meaning is that the Day of Judgment has drawn very near, but the condition of people is such that, despite its nearness, they remain heedless of it; they are engrossed only in the concerns of this world, and day by day they are becoming more distant from their Lord. The closer the Day of Judgment comes, the more people’s distance from their Lord increases. They are so absorbed in the greed and desire for the world that they have forgotten their Lord altogether. Reflect that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated this over fourteen hundred years ago, at a time when mankind was not as distant from their Lord as they have become today. This process of distancing from Allah Ta‘ala will continue in this manner until, near the Day of Judgment, the situation will reach such a point that not a single person will remain on the face of the earth who remembers Allah Ta‘ala, as is mentioned in the hadith: “The Day of Judgment will not be established until the remembrance of Allah ceases to be heard on the earth.”
