Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say in the sermon during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage: “A borrowed item must be returned, an animal taken for milk must also be returned, a debt must be repaid, and the guarantor is liable for compensation.”

Brief Explanation
Explanation—In this hadith, the command regarding the return of borrowed items has been given, and it has also been clarified that if a person becomes a guarantor on behalf of a debtor, then in the case of non-payment by the debtor, the guarantor is responsible for paying the compensation. That is, it is obligatory upon the guarantor that, in the event of the debtor’s failure to repay the debt, he fulfills this responsibility by paying the amount from his own wealth. However, if the rightful owner forgives, then that is a different matter.
