49 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُوسَى السِّمْسَارُ، أبنا أَبُو زَيْدٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْفَرَبْرِيُّ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْبُخَارِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ» وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting is a shield." And he narrated the (complete) hadith.
Brief Explanation
Explanation – In this hadith, the virtue of fasting (sawm) is described: fasting is a shield. In this world, it is a shield to protect oneself from the attacks of Satan, and in the Hereafter, it is a shield from the punishment of Hellfire. Just as in battle one protects oneself from the enemy’s blows with a shield, similarly, fasting is a shield to protect oneself from the attacks of the accursed Satan. When Satan attacks a servant and incites him to disobey his Master, fasting becomes a shield and saves him from disobedience to his Master. Then, when he remains protected from disobedience to Allah in this world, he will, insha Allah, also be saved from the punishment of Hellfire in the Hereafter. Thus, fasting is a shield for a person to protect him from satanic attacks in this world and from the punishment of the Fire in the Hereafter.
