Hadith 483

Amr bin Murrah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a person narrated a hadith to us in the house of Abu Ubaidah, that he heard Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrate a hadith from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, and... he narrated this hadith, but it did not contain the words «يوم القيامة» (on the Day of Resurrection).

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this hadith, the dreadful outcome of showing off (riya) is made clear. Riya means that a person worships Allah, Exalted is He, with the intention and purpose that his piety becomes known among people, that he gains some material benefit, or that his status is elevated among people, or at the very least, that people praise him. In the ahadith, riya has been called minor shirk (shirk asghar). Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id radi Allahu anhu reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to us while we were discussing the Messiah al-Dajjal. He said: "Shall I not inform you of something which, in my estimation, is more dangerous for you than the Messiah al-Dajjal?" We said: "Certainly." He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "It is hidden shirk: a man stands to pray, and he beautifies his prayer because he sees someone watching him (otherwise he would not do so)."

Another hadith is that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is minor shirk." The noble Companions radi Allahu anhum asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What is minor shirk?" He said: "Showing off (riya). On the Day of Resurrection, when people will be recompensed for their deeds, Allah will say (to the one who showed off): 'Go to those for whom you used to show your deeds in the world, and see if you find any reward with them.'"

Another hadith is that when Allah, Exalted is He, gathers all people on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, a caller will announce: "Whoever did any deed for Allah in which he associated someone else with Him, let him seek the reward of that deed from that one, for Allah is free of need from all partners."
