‘Ubādah bin Walīd bin ‘Ubādah bin Ṣāmit (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates, and Walīd bin ‘Ubādah had the companionship of the Prophet (peace be upon him). (‘Ubādah) said: I went out with my father when I was a young boy. We met a man. (Walīd) said: Uncle! I have recognized you; you are among the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Thus, we gained the company of an elder. With this elder was his slave, who was carrying a register. My father said to him: Uncle! How did your morning go? He said: With well-being. My father said: I see signs of anger on your face. He said: Yes, so-and-so son of so-and-so owed a debt. I went in search of him. I greeted at his door, and a small child came out from the house. I asked him, and he said that he (the debtor) was at home. So I called out: O so-and-so! Come out to me. So he came out to me. I said: What made you delay when I greeted you, but you neither came out nor replied to me? He said: By the One besides whom there is no deity, I had nothing (money), and indeed I feared that I would lie to you or make a promise and then break it. I said: Is it really by Allah, besides whom there is no deity? He said: Yes, by Allah, besides whom there is no deity. (Abū al-Yasar) said: I bear witness to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); my ears heard him say and my heart retained it: “Whoever gives respite to a debtor in difficulty or forgives him, Allah will shade him on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade.” He said: Therefore, I erased that document from him. ‘Ubādah bin Walīd says: He (Abū al-Yasar) was wearing a striped cloak and an embroidered mantle, and his slave was also wearing similar clothing. He says: I said: Uncle! What prevented you from giving this embroidered mantle to your slave and taking the striped cloak from him, so that you would have two striped cloaks and he would have two embroidered mantles? He says: He turned to me and said (to my father): Is this your son? He said: Yes. So he passed his hand over my head and said: May Allah bless you. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “Feed them (your slaves) with what you eat and clothe them with what you wear.” My nephew! The loss of worldly goods is dearer to me than that the Hereafter’s goods be taken from me. I said to my father: Abūji! Who is this elder? He said: This is Abū al-Yasar bin ‘Amr.
