Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever separates a mother from her child, Allah will separate him from his loved ones on the Day of Resurrection.”
Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this blessed hadith, the lesson of maintaining ties of kinship (silat al-rahm) is given: that children should not be separated from their parents, nor parents from their children. In earlier times, it used to happen that during the buying and selling of slaves and slave-girls, their minor children would be separated from them, sold to different places and to different people. Similarly, sometimes the parents would be sold or gifted, and their children would be kept back by the owner, or the child would be sold or gifted to someone else while the parents would be kept back. Islam has prohibited this and has stated that whoever does so, on the Day of Resurrection, when all creation will be gathered with their loved ones and relatives, Allah Ta‘ala will separate him from his loved ones and relatives, such as parents or children, etc.
In the blessed hadith, the mention of the mother has come because generally such treatment was meted out to mothers, and also because the grief and distress that a mother or her minor child feels upon being separated from each other is, in any case, not felt by the father. However, the father is also included in this ruling. Even in today’s modern era, a similar situation exists: it is commonly observed that when a husband and wife divorce, if the children are with the husband, he does not let them meet their mother, and if they are with the mother, she does not let them meet their father. In this way, children are caused pain and distress regarding their parents, and parents regarding their children, whereas the clear command of the Qur’an is:
﴿لَا تُضَارَّ وَالِدَةٌ بِوَلَدِهَا وَلَا مَوْلُودٌ لَّهُ بِوَلَدِهِ﴾ (al-Baqarah: 233)
“Neither should a mother be harmed because of her child, nor a father because of his child.”
The people of knowledge have even said that although there is no explicit prohibition of separation among animals, as far as possible, one should avoid causing separation among them, especially when the offspring of an animal is very young. And Allah knows best.
