Hadith 450

Zaid bin Aslam, may Allah have mercy on him, says that during the time of the Fitnah of Harrah, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, came to Ibn Muti’. He had a cushion brought for him and welcomed him. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: I have only come to you to tell you two things which I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I heard him say: “Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience (to the Imam), he will have no proof or argument for himself on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever separates from the community dies the death of ignorance (Jahiliyyah).”

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this hadith as well, the condemnation of the person who distances himself from the congregation (jama‘ah) and breaks the allegiance (bay‘ah) to the current caliph is mentioned.

“Whoever distances himself from the congregation dies the death of ignorance (jahiliyyah).” The meaning is that whoever deviates from the methodology and way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah—by which is meant those people who consider the creed of tawhid (monotheism) and adherence to the Sunnah as the foundation of religion, whose school is the Book and the Sunnah—then whoever deviates from their methodology and way dies the death of ignorance, meaning his death will be upon misguidance like the people of ignorance (jahiliyyah).

In one hadith it is stated: “Whoever distances himself from the congregation even by a handspan has thrown off the collar of Islam from his neck.” (See Hadith No. 448) In another hadith it is stated: “Adhere to the (true) congregation, for the lone sheep that strays away is eaten by the wolf.”

“Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience will have no proof for himself on the Day of Resurrection.” The meaning is that you must obey the unanimously agreed-upon caliph of the Muslims in all circumstances; do not create lawlessness by making trivial matters an excuse for breaking the law.

In the hadith it is stated: “Whoever dislikes something from his leader should be patient, for whoever departs from obedience to the ruler even by a hair’s breadth dies the death of ignorance (jahiliyyah).”

Another hadith states: “Indeed, after me you will see things that you will dislike.” The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! What do you command us regarding this? He said: “Give them their rights and ask Allah for your rights.”

Similarly, in another hadith it is mentioned that it was said to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: O Prophet of Allah! Tell us, if rulers are imposed over us who demand their rights from us but do not give us our rights, then what do you command us in such a situation? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam turned away from the questioner, but he repeated the question. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam again turned away. Then, after the second or third time, Sayyiduna Ash‘ath ibn Qays radi Allahu anhu pulled him back. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Listen and obey, for their burden is upon them and your burden is upon you.”

Another hadith: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman radi Allahu anhu says: I said, O Messenger of Allah! We were in evil, then Allah brought us this good; will there be evil after this good? He said: “Yes.” I asked: Will there be good after that evil? He said: “Yes.” I said: Will there be evil after that good? He said: “Yes.” I asked: What will its nature be? He said: “After me there will be leaders who will not act upon my guidance nor follow my Sunnah, and among them will be people whose hearts are like the hearts of devils in the bodies of men.” The narrator says: I said, O Messenger of Allah! What should I do if I encounter them? He said: “Listen to and obey the leader, even if your back is beaten and your wealth is taken; still listen and obey.”
