Qarzi reports that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), Abu Sa‘id Khudri, and Mu‘awiyah (may Allah be pleased with them) gathered together. Mu‘awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever among you wishes, let him begin by narrating a hadith which he heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which his ears heard and his heart preserved. The two of them (Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah and Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id) said: You begin, narrate to us the hadith which you have remembered. He said: I will do so. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Guarantee me six things and I will guarantee you Paradise: When you speak, do not lie; when you make a promise, do not break it; when you are entrusted, do not betray; lower your gaze; guard your private parts; and restrain your hands (from oppression).” Then Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Hurairah! Now you narrate. So he said: I heard Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Three types of people will be presented before Allah with their hands tied to their necks: a ruler, a judge, and a chief. Only their justice will release them from this state, and whoever among them committed oppression will be in the most severe and deepest part of the Fire.” (Then) Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “The earth never trembles as much as it does due to the ritual bath after fornication or due to unjust killing. And whoever acquires wealth through unlawful means, Allah will cause it to be lost through the rights of people. And whoever goes to the worldly people in the morning or evening seeking the world, he may acquire it, but (in reality) he is among those who mock the signs of Allah. And whoever goes to a ruler and speaks contrary to the truth according to his desire, he will be his companion in the Fire. And whoever goes to a ruler and backbites his brother, Allah will make His mercy forbidden for him on the Day of Resurrection.” Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) threw himself down from the couch. When the people left, he went to his sister, Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), and complained to her that Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) had deliberately narrated to him such severe ahadith that he was deeply distressed. Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: By Allah! I have heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) even more than what Abu Hurairah mentioned. Mu‘awiyah asked: What is that? She said: “Whoever does a good deed, it is for him; and whoever does an evil deed, it is also for him.” Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After the hadith you have narrated, who would desire rulership, judgment, or leadership (such positions)? She said: “The worst of Allah’s servants are those who say: O our Lord! Give us in this world, and for them there is nothing in the Hereafter.”
