433 - أنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ أنا الْقَاضِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ أنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ الْفَسَوِيُّ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ، نا حَمَّادُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ الْأَزْرَقُ، نا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ طَلْقٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَكَانَ مِنَ الْوَافِدِينَ الَّذِينَ وَفَدُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ سُئِلَ عَنْ عِلْمٍ فَكَتَمَهُ أُلْجِمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِلِجَامٍ مِنْ نَارٍ»
Qais bin Talq narrates from his father. And he (Qais's father) was among those who came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as part of a delegation. He says that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever is asked about some knowledge but conceals it, a bridle of fire will be put on him on the Day of Resurrection."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this hadith, a warning has been given regarding a person who is asked about a religious matter, and the questioner is in need of an answer, but despite having knowledge, he does not inform the questioner of the issue—as if he has placed a bridle upon his own mouth. Therefore, on the Day of Resurrection, the punishment will be in accordance with the sin: a bridle of fire will be placed in his mouth. However, if there is a legitimate Shar‘i excuse or there is a fear of corruption or the like, then in such a situation, it is permissible, acting with wisdom, to withhold certain matters. But at an important occasion and when a necessary statement is required, it is not permissible to conceal knowledge. Rather, this is such a grave crime that Allah Ta‘ala has, as a consequence, threatened the scholars of Bani Isra’il with the punishment of Hellfire. The mention of this in the Noble Qur’an is for our admonition. He said:

﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ مَا أَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالْهُدَىٰ مِن بَعْدِ مَا بَيَّنَّاهُ لِلنَّاسِ فِي الْكِتَابِ أُولَٰئِكَ يَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّاعِنُونَ ٭‏ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ تَابُوا وَأَصْلَحُوا وَبَيَّنُوا فَأُولَٰئِكَ أَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَنَا التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ ‎﴾ (al-Baqarah: 159-160)

“Indeed, those who conceal what We have sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We have made it clear for the people in the Book—those are the ones whom Allah curses, and those who curse, curse them. Except for those who repent and reform and make [it] clear—those, I will accept their repentance, and I am the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu used to say: “If these two verses were not in the Noble Qur’an, I would never narrate any hadith to you.” [بخاري : 2350]
