Hadith 405

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasted continuously, in reality, he did not fast."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
From this blessed hadith, it is understood that to fast continuously is not a virtuous act; rather, it is contrary to the Sunnah. Whoever fasts perpetually will not receive any reward from Allah Ta'ala, because he is acting contrary to the example of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and every action done contrary to his example is rejected. In one narration, the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“I (sometimes) observe voluntary fasts and (sometimes) leave them, and whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me.”
The Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) declared the fast of our master Dawud (alayhis salam) to be the best; he would fast one day and leave it the next. [
Our master Abdullah ibn Amr (radi Allahu anhu) used to fast every day. When this came to the knowledge of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he forbade him and said: “(Fast one day) and leave it (the next day), and (at night) stand (in prayer) and also sleep, because your body has a right over you, your eye has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you. (Fulfill the right of everyone.)”
