335 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ حَمْدَانَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ بْنِ مُوسَى، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ الْعَطَّارُ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَابِسِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تَوَاضَعُوا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ تَوَاضَعَ لِلَّهِ رَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ فَهُوَ فِي نَفْسِهِ صَغِيرٌ وَفِي أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ عَظِيمٌ، وَمَنْ تَكَبَّرَ وَضَعَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَهُوَ فِي أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ صَغِيرٌ وَفِي نَفْسِهِ كَبِيرٌ، وَحَتَّى لَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ كَلْبٍ أَوْ خِنْزِيرٍ»
Abis bin Rabi’ah reports that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said from the pulpit: “O people! Adopt humility, for indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Whoever adopts humility for the sake of Allah, Allah grants him elevation, so that he considers himself small in his own eyes while he is great in the eyes of the people. And whoever adopts arrogance, Allah the Mighty and Majestic makes him low, so that he considers himself great while he is small in the eyes of the people, until he becomes more despicable than a dog or a pig.’”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever adopts one degree of humility for the sake of Allah, Allah raises him by one degree in return, and whoever adopts one degree of arrogance before Allah, Allah lowers him by one degree in return, until He places him in the lowest of the low.” [ابن ماجه : 4176 ، وسنده حسن]
