Brief Explanation
Explanation: -
This noble statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is a manifest proof of decisive speech (fasl al-khitab), comprehensive words (jawami‘ al-kalim), and the jewels of speech (jawahir al-kalim). Only the people of knowledge can attain the understanding of the hidden oceans of meaning within it. The dangers of the tongue are numerous, and each danger surpasses the previous one; its calamities are countless: error, lying, tale-bearing, backbiting, ostentation, seeking fame, hypocrisy, obscene speech, argumentation, and indulgence in falsehood—all these are among the calamities of the tongue. The only means of protection from them is silence. If a person keeps his tongue under control, he will attain salvation. There is a proverb: “One silence averts a hundred thousand calamities.” Therefore, the tongue should be opened only for a good word; otherwise, there is safety in remaining silent.

There is a blessed hadith: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. [بخاري : رقم 6018]

And another hadith: “One should not engage in much speech except in the remembrance of Allah, for excessive speech apart from the remembrance of Allah hardens the heart, and the person with a hard heart is the farthest from Allah.” ([ترمذي : 2211 ، حسن])

Enjoining good (amr bil-ma‘ruf), forbidding evil (nahi ‘an al-munkar), speaking a good word, and truthfulness—all these are types of the remembrance of Allah.
