Brief Explanation
Explanation: In this hadith, there is mention of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam warning the Quraysh and, along with them, his own family. By Banu Hashim is meant his uncles and their descendants, and by Banu Qusay is meant the general Quraysh. He gathered all of them and presented to them the invitation of Islam and warned them of Allah’s punishments. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu narrates that when the verse ﴿وَأَنْذِرْعَشِيرَتَكَالأَقْرَبِينَ﴾ (Ash-Shu‘ara: 214) “And warn your closest relatives” was revealed, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called out to the Quraysh, and they all gathered. He addressed both the general and the specific, saying: O Banu Ka‘b ibn Lu’ayy! Save yourselves from the Fire of Hell. O Banu Murrah ibn Ka‘b! Save yourselves from the Fire. O Banu ‘Abd Shams! Save yourselves from the Fire. O Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib! Save yourselves from the Fire. O Fatimah! Save yourself from the Fire. I have no power to do anything for you before Allah. However, the right of kinship, I will continue to fulfill with kindness. [مسلم : 204]
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu narrates that when ﴿وَأَنْذِرْعَشِيرَتَكَالأَقْرَبِينَ﴾ (Ash-Shu‘ara: 214) was revealed, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam climbed Mount Safa and began to call out: Banu Fihr! Banu ‘Adiyy! When they all gathered, he said: “Tell me, if I were to inform you that there is an army in the valley intending to attack you, would you believe me?” They said: Yes, we have always found you truthful. He said: “I am a warner to you before a severe punishment.” Abu Lahab said: May you perish for the rest of the day! Is this why you gathered us? Then Surah Lahab was revealed.
