Hadith 316

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: "Three (persons') supplications are (surely) accepted, there is no doubt in their acceptance: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of a parent against his child."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this blessed hadith, the acceptance of the supplication (dua) of three types of people is mentioned—that their supplication is certainly accepted, whether it is accepted quickly or after some delay, but it is definitely accepted. These three people are:

The Oppressed (Mazlum):
A person upon whom any kind of injustice has been done is called a mazlum (oppressed). The supplication (curse) made by the oppressed against the oppressor is certainly accepted. In a narration reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, it is mentioned that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh radi Allahu anhu to Yemen, he gave him several pieces of advice, among which was this: Beware of the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah. “[بخاري : 1496]

When Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu appointed his servant Hani as the governor of the public pasture, he advised him, saying: “O Hani! Withhold your hand from the Muslims (i.e., do not oppress them), and beware of the supplication of the oppressed among the Muslims, for the supplication of the oppressed is certainly accepted.” [بخاري : 3059]

Even if the oppressed is a sinner, a transgressor, or a non-Muslim, Allah accepts his supplication, because the reason for the acceptance of his supplication is his being oppressed. Therefore, even if the oppressed is a sinner (fasiq) or a disbeliever (kafir), his supplication (curse) is still accepted, and this is also in accordance with Allah’s justice and fairness, that He listens to the call of the oppressed.

The Traveler (Musafir):
The supplication of the traveler is also certainly accepted. In the blessed hadith, travel has been called “a portion of torment” (see: Hadith number 225), because during travel a person faces various kinds of difficulties and troubles, the pain of separation from family, children, and friends, along with the hardships and fatigue of travel. During travel, a person is greatly helpless, distressed, and powerless. Then, when in such a state he knocks at the door of his Creator and Master, he certainly receives goodness from the door of the Master. Therefore, the moments of travel should be spent in supplications and entreaties to Allah, rather than watching films, listening to qawwalis and songs, or engaging in useless talk.

Parents:
In the aforementioned hadith, the mention is of the father, but in another narration, the words “parents” are also found (see: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad: 32). Therefore, the supplication made by the father or mother regarding their children is certainly accepted. Parents are the means for a person’s coming into this world; they have raised their children, given preference to their children’s needs over their own, and after Allah’s favors in this world, the greatest favors are those of the parents. Now, if despite all this, the children trouble their parents, then Allah has promised the parents that He will certainly accept your supplication (curse) against such unworthy children. In some narrations, supplication is mentioned, and in others, curse; the meaning is that the supplication or curse of the parents regarding their children is certainly accepted.
