Brief Explanation
Explanation: It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr radi Allahu anha that a woman said: O Messenger of Allah! I have a co-wife; will I be sinful if I show (her) that I am receiving much from my husband, while in reality I am not receiving those things from him? At this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “One who pretends to have been given something which was not given to her is like one who wears a garment of falsehood.” [بخاري : 5219]
This hadith is very comprehensive and contains a broad meaning within it. In it, every kind of affectation and pretension has been condemned. Whether co-wives do this to trouble one another, or any other person does so to show off to people, it is not permissible for anyone. Some people have a desire to appear great, but they do not possess the qualities to be great, so they resort to lies to present themselves as great before others. For example: they present themselves as great scholars and learned people, while in reality they are ignorant; they present themselves as highly intelligent and clever before people, while the reality is the opposite; similarly, some read the research of others or hear it from them and then present it as their own research; and there are some who wear fine clothes to present themselves as wealthy and affluent. In the aforementioned hadith, all such behaviors have been condemned, as they are all based on lies and deception and are grave sins. Allah Ta’ala says:
“Do not ever think of those who rejoice for what they have done, and love to be praised for what they did not do, as being safe from the punishment; and for them is a painful punishment.”
