Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Supplication is worship (and Allah has said) «وَقَالَرَبُّكُمُادْعُونِيأَسْتَجِبْلَكُمْإِنَّالَّذِينَيَسْتَكْبِرُونَعَنْعِبَادَتِيسَيَدْخُلُونَجَهَنَّمَدَاخِرِينَ».” (Al-Mu’min: 60) “And your Lord said: Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Indeed, those who are too proud for My worship will soon enter Hell in humiliation.”

Brief Explanation
Explanation – Supplication (dua) is called worship because it is the essence of every act of worship; every act of worship contains supplication within it. Furthermore, the statement of the Lord of the worlds is also evidence for this, that supplication itself is the real worship and calling upon Allah is true servitude. In this verse, Allah the Exalted has referred to supplication as worship; from this it is established that whoever calls upon Allah and seeks his needs from Him, it is as if he is worshipping Him. And whoever, for matters beyond apparent means, calls upon anyone from among His creation other than Him, then in reality, he is worshipping the creation instead of his Creator.
