Hadith 295

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two blessings regarding which many people are in loss: (one is) health and (the other is) free time."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this blessed hadith, two such blessings of Allah Ta'ala are mentioned which are very important, yet people do not value them. These blessings are:

Health:
Health is a very great blessing of Allah Ta'ala. Its value is realized when a person falls ill. Therefore, wisdom lies in valuing this blessing before illness comes, and in making the most of it by gathering as much provision for the Hereafter as possible, because the good deeds that can be performed in a healthy life cannot be performed in a state of illness. It is mentioned in the hadith that a strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah Ta'ala than a weak believer, although there is goodness in both.

Free Time:
Free time is also a very great blessing of Allah Ta'ala. One should value it, and before becoming preoccupied, one should consider free time as a precious opportunity and benefit from it. One should spend one's free time in the worship of Allah and in serving the religion. The condition of the majority of people is such that when they have health, they become so engrossed in worldly means that they do not find time for worship, and if they are free from worldly means, then health does not support them. And when both blessings of health and free time are available, then laziness and indolence prevail, due to which opportunities for worship of Allah and service to the religion are lost. This is the real loss and deprivation.
