291 - أَخْبَرَنَا هِبَةُ اللَّهُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الصَّوَابُ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ دَاوُدَ مَأْمُونٌ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا حَازِمٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَرُوذِيُّ، بِالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْخَفَّافُ، أبنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السَّرَّاجُ، ثنا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «التَّصْفِيحُ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَالتَّسْبِيحُ لِلرِّجَالِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Clapping is for women and saying Subhan Allah is for men.”

Explanation:
From this hadith, it is understood that if the imam needs to be alerted to something during the prayer, the prescribed (masnun) method is that a male follower should say "Subhan Allah," and if the follower is a woman, she should clap. That is, she should strike her right hand on the back of her left hand, not clap in the common manner, because that is amusement and play, and amusement and play are not permissible in prayer. Women are prohibited from saying "Subhan Allah" so that their voices do not become a cause of temptation (fitnah), and men are prohibited from clapping because this is an action specific to women.
