Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "What disease can be worse than miserliness?"

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked: “Banu Salamah! Who is your chief?” We replied: Jad ibn Qays, although we consider him to be miserly. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “And what disease is greater than miserliness? Rather, your chief is Amr ibn al-Jamuh.” Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-Jamuh radi Allahu anhu used to look after their idols in the days of ignorance. Whenever the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam contracted a marriage, he (Amr) would host the wedding feast (walimah) on his behalf.

In this hadith, the condemnation of miserliness is mentioned: what disease can be worse than miserliness? What defect can be more repugnant than this? Whoever, out of fear of hunger, poverty, and destitution, refrains from spending in the way of Allah, in reality, has not affirmed the truthfulness of the Lawgiver (Shari‘). He is afflicted with such a disease that, whether or not he is punished for it in this world, he will certainly be punished for it in the Hereafter, as Allah the Exalted says:

“And let not those who are miserly with what Allah has given them of His bounty think that it is good for them; rather, it is bad for them. They will have hung around their necks that which they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.”

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Beware of oppression, for oppression will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. And beware of miserliness, for it destroyed those who came before you. It incited them to shed each other’s blood and to make lawful for themselves what was unlawful.” (Muslim: 2578)

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to seek refuge from miserliness. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would say:

“O Allah! I seek refuge in You from cowardice, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, I seek refuge in You from being returned to a decrepit old age, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world and the punishment of the grave.”
