Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “A (false) oath may sell the goods, but it destroys the blessing.”
Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In these ahadith, taking a false oath in order to sell goods has been condemned.
In the first hadith, it is stated that doing so causes one’s earnings to be destroyed, meaning that one’s income decreases and business declines. How long can a person who swears false oaths continue to sell his goods by relying on lies? Sooner or later, it will become known that he is a liar and swears false oaths; thus, people will stop buying from him, and his business will decline.
In the second hadith, it is stated that blessing (barakah) is removed, meaning the wealth becomes unlawful (haram) and the blessing is taken away. Even if the wealth is abundant, needs are not fulfilled. How great a sin it is to sell one’s goods by taking a false oath! Consider this: the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “There are three persons with whom, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify, and for them is a painful punishment.” The companion said, “These people are ruined and in loss. O Messenger of Allah! Who are they?” He said, “The one who lets his lower garment hang (below the ankles), the one who reminds others of his favors, and the one who sells his goods by swearing a false oath.” [مسلم : 102]
Another hadith states: “There are three persons with whom, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify, and for them is a painful punishment: one is the person who has surplus water at a pathway but prevents a traveler from taking it; the second is the man who pledges allegiance to an imam only for worldly benefit—if the imam gives him according to his desire, he remains loyal, but if not, he breaks the pledge; the third is the person who, after ‘Asr, sells goods to someone and swears by Allah that he was offered such-and-such amount for it (while in reality he was not), and the other (buyer) believes him and purchases the goods.” [بخاري : 2672 نسائي : 4467]
Similarly, lying in business transactions has also been prohibited. Thus, the Prophet’s noble statement is: “The two parties involved in a sale have the option (to cancel) as long as they have not separated. If they both speak the truth and clarify everything, there will be blessing in their transaction; but if they lie and conceal the situation, the blessing will be removed from their transaction.” [مسلم : 1532 نسائي : 4463]
Just as taking a false oath in buying and selling is wrong, taking a true oath is also not a good thing. The statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is: “Avoid excessive swearing during buying and selling, for although it promotes business, it will eventually destroy it.” [مسلم : 1607]
