Brief Explanation
Explanation:
Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed by a woman who was weeping at the grave of her child. He said to her: “Fear Allah and be patient.” She replied: “What concern do you have with my calamity?” She was then informed that it was the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. She then came to his presence and found no doorkeeper at his door. She said: “O Messenger of Allah! I did not recognize you.” So the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Patience is only at the first blow.” [ابوداود : 3124، صحيح]

The meaning of his statement is that only that patience is valid and valued by Allah which is exercised at the very onset of the calamity. First wailing, lamenting, and when one is exhausted, then saying, “I have been patient”? This is not patience, rather it is compulsion for which there is no alternative, because lamentation and wailing cannot last forever; eventually, they must come to an end. Therefore, this cannot be called patience. Patience is only that which is shown at the first blow, and it is this patience that we have been commanded to observe, and it is this patience that brings reward and recompense.
