Brief Explanation
Explanation: ‘Abd al-Qays is the name of a tribe that was settled in the vicinity of Bahrain. When these people accepted Islam, they sent a delegation to the presence of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), which asked him about faith and about beverages. The Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) answered their questions and gave them advice, among which was this advice: that every person is himself accountable for his own soul, meaning every person should hold himself to account for what he is doing and in which direction he is heading.
And he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Every nation may drink from those vessels which they find suitable.” When he forbade this delegation from eating and drinking in certain specific vessels, one of them said: “We do not have any vessels other than these.” Then the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Drink from those which you find suitable, but if they are bad, then leave them.” (Ahmad: 2/355)
The meaning is that when the vessels are pure and clean, then you may drink from whichever vessel you wish, except for those vessels from which eating and drinking has been permanently prohibited by the Shari‘ah, such as vessels of gold and silver.
