Hadith 198

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People are like one hundred camels among which a man does not find even one fit for riding."

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this blessed hadith, the condition of the majority of people has been described: that most people are deprived of excellent qualities and perfect attributes. Just as among camels, a good camel that is suitable for riding, that easily allows its rider to mount its back and obeys his command, is very rarely found, similarly, people possessing excellent qualities and perfect attributes are also very few. The majority consists of the treacherous, the deceitful, the disloyal, those distant from religion, and those who disobey Allah Ta’ala; trustworthy, loyal, and religiously observant people are very few.

If we look at it overall, it is evident that, on earth, the majority has always been of bad and undesirable people. And if the discussion is limited to the Ummah of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), then what is meant are the people who came after the three generations (the best generations), i.e., those who came after the Sahabah, the Tabi‘in, and the Tabi‘ al-Tabi‘in. In the three generations, good people were in the majority and bad people were very few, but later the situation became completely the opposite: the majority became bad and the minority good. Even today, this is the situation: Muslims are present in great numbers everywhere, but true Muslims are very rarely seen.

Consider the following hadith:
Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radi Allahu anhu) says that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told us two things. Of the two, I have seen one (that it has occurred), and I am waiting for the other (to occur). The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Trustworthiness (the quality of honesty) descended into the depths of people’s hearts.” And the Qur’an was revealed, we learned the Qur’an and we learned the Sunnah (thus this quality became even more established). Then you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told us about its removal and said: “A man will sleep once, and trustworthiness will be lifted from his heart, leaving behind a mark, like the mark of a dot. Then he will sleep again, and (the remaining) trustworthiness will also be lifted from his heart, and its effect will remain like a blister, as if a burning coal fell on your foot and it swelled up. You see it raised, but inside there is nothing.” (While saying this) Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radi Allahu anhu) took a handful of pebbles and dropped them on his shin.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Then people will engage in transactions with one another, but no one will fulfill trusts, to the extent that it will be said: There is a trustworthy man in such-and-such tribe, and to the extent that about a man it will be said: How intelligent he is! How courageous he is! How wise he is! Yet there will not be in his heart faith even equal to a mustard seed.” And (Sayyiduna Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu said): There was a time for me when I did not care whom I dealt with. (I was sure that) if he was a Muslim, his faith would bring him back to me (to fulfill my right), and if he was a Jew or a Christian, his official (responsible authority) would bring him back to me. But today (the situation is such that) I do not buy and sell except with so-and-so and so-and-so. [بخاري : 6497 ، ابن ماجه : 3054]
