Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People are like mines of gold and silver (of different kinds); the best of them in the pre-Islamic period are the best of them in Islam, provided they gain understanding of the religion."

Brief Explanation
Explanation: In this blessed hadith, people have been likened to mines of gold and silver: just as mines differ—some yield pure, refined, superior, and precious things, while others yield inferior and worthless things—the same is true of human beings. Among people, too, there are all kinds: some, due to their character and conduct, are extremely dignified and honorable; some are of a slightly lesser rank than these; and some are such that, in terms of their character and conduct, are extremely lowly, useless, and insignificant.
The good people of the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), if after embracing Islam they come to understand the requirements of the religion, can attain the highest levels of greatness and honor—just as gold and silver, as long as they remain in the mine, are not in their true state due to being mixed with earth, but when they are extracted and put into the furnace and refined, not only do they return to their original state, but their beauty is further enhanced. The same is the case with those people who, because they were immersed in the darkness of disbelief and misguidance, could not attain the greatness and honor that should have been theirs; but as soon as they emerged from those darknesses into the light of Islam and made Islam their entire way of life, they reached the highest peaks of honor, greatness, and dignity.
