Imam Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that ‘Amr bin Dinar narrated to him a hadith from the chain of Qa‘qa‘ bin Hakim from Abu Salih from ‘Ata bin Yazid. Imam Sufyan says: Then I met Suhail, the son of Abu Salih. I said to him: Did you hear from your father the hadith which ‘Amr bin Dinar narrated to us from the chain of Qa‘qa‘ bin Hakim from Abu Salih? He said: I heard that hadith from the one who narrated it to my father. I heard ‘Ata bin Yazid al-Laithi narrate this hadith from Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: “The religion is sincere advice.” The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: O Messenger of Allah! For whom? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “For Allah, for His Book, for His Prophet, for the leaders and rulers of the Muslims, and for the general Muslims.” This hadith has also been narrated by Imam Muslim from Muhammad bin ‘Abbad al-Makki, who said: Sufyan narrated to us, he says: I said to Suhail: Indeed, ‘Amr narrated to us from Qa‘qa‘ from your father this hadith, so he said: I hope that (in my chain) there will be one less intermediary between me and the source. Then he said: I heard this hadith from the person from whom my father heard it; he had a friend in Syria (he narrated the whole incident). Then Imam Sufyan narrated this hadith to us from the chain of Suhail from ‘Ata bin Yazid from Tamim al-Dari, that indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this.

Brief Explanation
Explanation . . . . . ‘Ata bin Yazid al-Laithi was a friend of Abu Salih; he used to come and go to him from the land of al-Sham. Once, he came and narrated to him, through the authority of Sayyiduna Tamim al-Dari radi Allahu anhu, this hadith of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: “Religion is sincere counsel.” Abu Salih’s son, Suhayl bin Abi Salih, also heard this hadith from him. Afterwards, Abu Salih narrated this hadith to his student, Qa‘qa‘ bin Hakim, who narrated it to ‘Amr bin Dinar, and he in turn narrated it to Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah. Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah mentioned to Suhayl that perhaps he too had heard this hadith from his father, so that his chain of transmission (isnad) would be elevated (i.e., have fewer narrators). Then Suhayl said to him: “I will tell you its elevated chain: the person from whom my father heard this hadith, I too have heard it from him.” Then he narrated this hadith with his own chain. Thus, this hadith reached Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah through two chains:

➊ - ‘Amr bin Dinar from Qa‘qa‘ bin Hakim from Abu Salih from ‘Ata bin Yazid . . .
➋ Suhayl from ‘Ata bin Yazid

The first chain is lower (nazil). In technical terminology, a lower chain (nazil sanad) is one in which the number of narrators is greater compared to the other chain. The second chain is elevated (‘ali). An elevated chain (‘ali sanad) is one in which the number of narrators is fewer compared to the other chain. The scholars of hadith (muhaddithun) would strive to have as few narrators as possible in the chain so that the chain would be elevated, as is evident in the aforementioned narration in the case of Imam Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, who mentioned it to Abu Salih for the purpose of obtaining an elevated chain.
