It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim; he does not oppress him nor does he let him be oppressed. And whoever remains engaged in fulfilling the need of his brother, Allah remains engaged in fulfilling his need. And whoever removes any worldly distress from a Muslim, Allah will remove some distress from him on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection.”
Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In this blessed hadith, several teachings have been imparted:
① Islamic Brotherhood: A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. Thus, all Muslims around the world, whether they live in any region of the earth, whether they are white or black, rich or poor, are all brothers to one another. ﴿إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ﴾ (Al-Hujurat: 10) “Indeed, the believers are but brothers.”
② Prohibition of Oppression: Since all Muslims are brothers to one another, it necessitates that no Muslim should oppress another Muslim himself, nor should he allow anyone else to oppress him. In one hadith it is stated: “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or oppressed.” The Companions radi Allahu anhum asked: O Messenger of Allah! We can help the oppressed, but how can we help the oppressor? He said: Restrain his hand (from oppression). (Bukhari: 2444) Thus, the requirement of Islamic brotherhood is that one should neither oppress his Muslim brother, nor allow oppression to occur to him, nor allow him to oppress anyone else.
③ Fulfilling Needs: Whoever remains engaged in fulfilling the need of his brother, Allah remains engaged in fulfilling his need. In another narration it is stated: “Allah helps His servant as long as the servant is engaged in helping his brother.” Thus, a prescription is being given that whoever wishes for his own need to be fulfilled and for Allah to help him, should fulfill some lawful need of his Muslim brother; Allah will fulfill his need. The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: ﴿وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ﴾ (Al-Ma’idah: 2) “Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and transgression.”
If we act upon these commands of Allah and His Messenger, then by Allah! Everywhere there will be an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, and society will become a cradle of security.
④ Removing Distress and Hardship: Whoever removes any distress from the worldly distresses of a Muslim, Allah will remove from him one of the distresses of the Day of Resurrection. This means that if a Muslim brother faces any worry, grief, pain, or any kind of hardship, then other Muslims should try their utmost to remove that distress from their brother. Whoever participates in helping his brother in this regard, Allah will remove from him one of the distresses of the Day of Resurrection. Here, to the extent that one helps his brother in his worldly hardships, Allah will remove an equal number of his hardships on the Day of Resurrection.
⑤ Concealing Faults: “Whoever conceals the fault of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his fault on the Day of Resurrection.” This means that if your brother has any flaw, deficiency, or shortcoming that is not known to the general public, do not publicize it; rather, cover it and advise him privately with sincerity so that he may reform himself. In another narration it is stated: “Whoever conceals the fault of a Muslim, Allah, the Exalted, will conceal his faults in this world and the Hereafter.” (Muslim: 2799) However, remember that concealing faults does not mean that a person covers up someone’s crimes and goes around giving false testimony in his favor, because false testimony is among the major sins.
