It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was moving his lips during the days of Khaybar. He was asked, "What supplication are you making?" He replied: "I am saying: (O Allah!) I walk and move about only with Your help, I fight only with Your help, and I attack only with Your help."

Brief Explanation
Explanation: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayb radi Allahu anhu that during the days of Hunayn, after the Fajr prayer, the lips of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam were moving due to something; we had not seen you do this before. We said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, we are seeing you do something which you did not do (before). Why are your lips moving? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “Among the previous nations, there was a prophet who became very pleased with the large number of his followers, so he said that nothing could defeat them. Allah sent revelation to him that he should choose one of three things for his people: either We will impose upon them an enemy who will shed their blood, or We will impose hunger upon them, or death. He consulted his people, and they said: We do not have the strength to fight an enemy, and we cannot be patient over hunger, but death (is acceptable). So Allah sent death upon them, and within just three days, seventy thousand of them died. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: That is why, upon seeing the large number of these (companions), I am saying: O Allah! I walk about only with Your help, I attack only with Your help, and I fight only with Your help.”
From this hadith, it is understood that in times of battle, instead of being proud of one’s own strength and power, one should place trust in Allah Ta’ala and supplicate to Him so that His help remains with us.
In Surah al-Anfal, some etiquettes of war have been mentioned for the people of faith; if these are followed when facing the enemy, then surely success can be attained.
“O believers! When you encounter an opposing army, remain steadfast and remember Allah abundantly so that you may succeed. And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute with one another, lest you falter and your strength departs; and be patient—indeed, Allah is with those who are patient. And do not be like those who came out of their homes boastfully and to be seen by people, and who hinder others from the way of Allah; and Allah encompasses whatever they do.”
