Hadith 1465

Sufyan narrated this tradition once as a marfu’ (attributed) to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and once as mawquf (stopped) at Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Grandeur is My cloak and greatness is My lower garment, so whoever tries to snatch any of these from Me, I will throw him into the Fire.’”

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
In these hadiths, the condemnation of pride and arrogance for human beings has been stated, and they have been warned of its evil consequences. Greatness and majesty are intrinsic attributes of Allah Ta'ala. We affirm all the attributes of Allah Ta'ala without likening (tamthil), negating (ta'til), or asking how (takyyif). Alhamdulillah, the meaning of expressing greatness and majesty as an izar (lower garment) and rida (cloak) is— and Allah knows best— that just as these two garments are specific to the one who wears them and do not accept sharing, similarly, perfect greatness and majesty are befitting only to Allah Ta'ala. If any created being possesses temporary and limited greatness and majesty, it is only by the grant of Allah Ta'ala. Therefore, it is obligatory upon a person to express gratitude to Allah Ta'ala for this, rather than adopting the path of arrogance and pride by claiming greatness and majesty for oneself.
