Brief Explanation
Explanation: From this hadith it is established that it is obligatory upon a person to provide for and fulfill the needs of those individuals whose maintenance is his responsibility. The evidence for its being obligatory is that a person is only considered sinful for abandoning an obligation (wajib), and a person is the provider (kafeel) for his family, children, and his slaves; providing their sustenance, expenses, and fulfilling their needs is obligatory upon him. In the same way, Allah Ta’ala has made man responsible for the nourishment of every living being. Whoever is under a person’s care, he has been made responsible for their nourishment; if he does not fulfill this, he will be punished.
It is mentioned in the hadith that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu narrates: “A woman killed a cat by starving it; she neither fed it nor gave it water, nor did she let it go so that it could eat from the earth. As a result of this, that woman was sent to Hell.” [بخاري : 3482 ، كتاب احاديث الانبياء ، مسلم : 2282، تفهيم الاسلام : 2/ 507]
