مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا مِثْلُ مَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِصْبَعَهُ السَّبَّابَةَ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ يَرْجِعُThe world compared to the Hereafter is like one of you dipping his finger in the sea; let him see what he brings back

1387 - أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، أنا الْقَاضِي أَبُو طَاهِرٍ، نا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، أنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ مُسْتَوْرِدٍ الْفِهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا كَمَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِصْبَعَهُ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ يَرْجِعُ»
Sayyiduna Mistawrid Fahri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The world in comparison to the Hereafter is like one of you dipping his finger into the sea, then (taking it out and) seeing how much water it returns with."

In these ahadith, through a very beautiful example, the status of this world in comparison to the Hereafter has been described, and it has been explained that just as a drop clinging to a finger has no significance compared to the ocean, similarly, the world has no value in comparison to the Hereafter. The life of the Hereafter and its blessings are as much greater than the life of this world and its blessings as the ocean is greater than the small drop of water clinging to a finger. Therefore, one should strive for the Hereafter, not for the world.
