Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “May Allah have mercy on the servant who adopts gentleness when giving and also maintains gentleness when demanding.” Tabarani said: No one has narrated this from Muhammad bin Munkadir except Abu Ghassan.

Brief Explanation
Explanation: Gentleness at the time of buying and selling means adopting such an attitude while purchasing that the seller does not incur any loss, and similarly, while selling, adopting such a manner that the customer does not experience any hardship—even to the extent that if the buyer wishes to return the goods, he should accept the return. Another meaning is that while buying, one gives more than the original price, and while selling, one gives more goods than the price received. Furthermore, when taking one’s due from someone, one should also act with gentleness rather than harshness in making the demand, and should not exceed the bounds of etiquette and respect. If the person is poor, then grant him respite, or even forgive the debt altogether. “And to remit it by way of charity is better for you” (1). (Riyadh as-Salihin: 2132)
