Brief Explanation
Explanation: From this hadith, it is understood that it is better for women to perform prayer in their homes rather than in the mosque. However, this does not mean that it is prohibited for women to come to the mosque and pray; the real matter depends on their own will and desire. If they wish to come to the mosque and pray, then permission is granted. The statement of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is: “Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from the mosques of Allah.” [بخاري : 900]
Another hadith states: “Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from the mosques of Allah, but they should go out without adornment (i.e., they should come in a simple state).” [أبو داود : 565 ، وسنده حسن]
In this regard, there is a very faith-inspiring incident of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu. He narrated the hadith that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Allow women to go to the mosques even at night.” Then the son of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu said, “By Allah! We will not allow them; they will make it an excuse (to go out). By Allah! We will not allow them.” At this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu became very angry and rebuked him, and said: “I am telling you that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, ‘Allow them,’ and you say, ‘We will not allow them.’” [مسلم : 442]
It is thus understood that if women wish to come to the mosque with permission, they should not be prevented, provided that they come modestly and in simple clothing, as the female Companions (sahabiyyat) used to do. However, it is still preferable that they perform prayer in their homes. The statement of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is: “Do not prevent your women from the mosques, but their prayer in their homes is better for them.” [أبو داود : 67 5 ، صحيح]
