It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that indeed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best charity is that which is given when a person is still wealthy after giving it, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and start (charity) with those whom you support."

Brief Explanation
Explanation: "The best charity is that after which a person remains self-sufficient." The meaning is that a person should first look to his own needs; it should not be that whatever wealth he has, he gives it all away in charity and alms, and then goes around stretching his hand before others for his own necessities.
"The upper hand is better than the lower hand." By "upper hand" is meant the hand that spends (gives), and by "lower hand" is meant the hand of the beggar, as is mentioned in the hadith: "The upper hand is the one that spends, and the lower hand is the one that asks." (Bukhari: 1429)
In another hadith, it is stated that there are three types of hands: one is the hand of Allah, which is the highest of all; the second is the hand of the giver, which comes after that; and the hand of the beggar is the lowest. Therefore, give away what is surplus, and do not make yourself helpless before your own soul (i.e., do not obey its every demand).[أبو داود : 1649 وقال شخينا على زئي : إسناده صحيح]
"Begin with those whom you support." For details on this, see Hadith number 634.
"Whoever refrains, Allah will protect him." That is, whoever refrains from begging or unlawful acts, Allah, exalted is He, will protect him from those things. From this, it is also understood that the quality of refraining from begging or unlawful acts is greatly beloved to Allah, exalted is He; Allah, exalted is He, helps those who, out of fear of Him, avoid such acts.
"Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient." That is, whoever adopts independence from people in worldly matters, Allah will make him independent of people, and will save him from the humiliation of stretching his hand before others, and will grant him the wealth of self-effacement, patience, and contentment.
