1212 - أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الشَّاهِدُ، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَامِعٍ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، حَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مَطَرٍ، عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ خَرُوفٍ، ثنا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَ. وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ التُّجِيبِيُّ، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ بُهْزَادٍ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ كَثِيرِ بْنِ عُفَيْرٍ، ثنا أَبِي , ح. وَأَخْبَرَنَا تُرَابُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أبنا الْمُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أبنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ، حَ. وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أبنا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْمَدِينِيُّ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالُوا أبنا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ، إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ» قَالَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ: عَنْ مَالِكٍ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ يُوسُفَ: أبنا مَالِكٌ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ عُفَيْرٍ: حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ بُكَيْرٍ: ثَنَا مَالِكٌ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ: أَخْبَرَنِي مَالِكٌ، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى وَعَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى بْنِ حَمَّادٍ قَالَا: كِلَاهُمَا قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who overpowers others in wrestling is not strong and brave; rather, the strong and brave one is he who controls himself when he is angry." (Imam) Malik has narrated this hadith through five narrators as follows: Qanabi said «عن مالك» (from Malik); Ibn Yusuf said «انبانا مالك» (Malik informed us); Ibn Safir said «حدثني مالك» (Malik narrated to me); Ibn Bukair said «ثنا مالك» (Malik narrated to us); and Ibn Wahb said «اخبرني مالك» (Malik informed me). Muslim bin Hajjaj has also narrated it in a similar manner from Yahya bin Sa'id and Abdullah bin Hammad with his chain, both of whom said: «قرأت على مالك» (I recited to Malik).

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has declared that person to be brave who, at the time of anger, controls his own self (nafs) and restrains his emotions, because a person's greatest adversary and enemy is his own commanding self (nafs al-ammara). When it becomes inflamed with rage, to keep it under control and to gain victory over it is true bravery. A person who keeps defeating great wrestlers and overpowers the mightiest of enemies, but cannot control his own self—how can he be called brave? Therefore, it has been stated that the brave one is not he who overcomes his opponent in wrestling, but rather the truly brave one is he who, in anger, controls his own self.
