Hadith 1202

Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Whoever does not recite the Qur’an with a pleasant voice is not from among us.”

Brief Explanation
Explanation:
One meaning of this hadith is exactly as Imam Shafi’i rahimahullah has stated, and the second meaning is the beautification of the voice—that is, the Qur’an should be recited with melodiousness and a pleasant voice. Most scholars have explained it in this way, and the hadith itself also supports this meaning.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Allah has not listened to anything as attentively as He listened to His Prophet reciting the Qur’an aloud with a pleasant melody.” [

It is also mentioned in the hadith: “Adorn the Qur’an with your voices.” [

Another hadith states: “Beautify the Qur’an with your voices, for a good voice increases the beauty of the Qur’an.”

Melodiousness in the Qur’an can only be achieved when it is recited aloud with proper pronunciation. Ibn Abi Mulaykah was asked: What if someone does not have a beautiful voice? He replied: Beautify your voice as much as possible.

Another meaning of this hadith is self-sufficiency—that is, whoever, after reciting the Qur’an and acquiring its knowledge, does not become independent of the world, is not from among us. And Allah knows best.

The warning mentioned in the hadith does not mean that such a person is outside the fold of Islam, but rather that one who does not recite the Qur’an with melodiousness is not upon the way of the Prophet, because the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to recite the Qur’an with melodiousness, as is established in authentic ahadith.
