1175 - أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، أبنا زَاهِرُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، أبنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، أبنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، أبنا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، أبنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ رَبِّ الْعِزَّةِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّمَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا بَلَاءٌ وَفِتْنَةٌ، وَإِنَّمَا مَثَلُ عَمَلِ أَحَدِكُمْ كَمَثَلِ الْوِعَاءِ إِذَا طَابَ أَعْلَاهُ طَابَ أَسْفَلُهُ، وَإِذَا خَبُثَ أَعْلَاهُ خَبُثَ أَسْفَلُهُ»
Abu Abd Rabb al-Izzat says that I heard Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on the pulpit that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only trial and tribulation remain in the world, and the example of each of your deeds is like that of a vessel, if the upper part (of its drink) is pure, then the lower part will also be pure, and if the upper part is impure, then the lower part will also be impure."

The meaning is that soon the best era of the world, that is, the era of the righteous generations (khayr al-quroon), is about to end, and when the era of the righteous generations ends, then nothing will remain in the world except trials, tribulations, and temptations (fitan).
