1163 - وأنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، أنا أَبُو الطَّيِّبِ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ الْمَعْرُوفُ، بِابْنِ بِنْتِ الشَّافِعِيِّ، نا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَفَّانَ الْجَرْجَرَائِيُّ الْمَعْرُوفُ بِالْعَسُولِيِّ، بِإِنْطَاكِيَةَ، نا مُوسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقُلَّا، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ خُرَيْقٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، بِطُولِهِ، وَفِيهِ: فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ قَتَلُوهُ قَتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ، أَلَا سَأَلُوا إِذْ لَمْ يَعْلَمُوا، فَإِنَّمَا شِفَاءُ الْعِيِّ السُّؤَالُ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), and he related this hadith in detail, and in it was also that this matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They killed him, may Allah destroy them! When they did not know the ruling, why did they not ask? Surely, asking is the cure for ignorance."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu says that in the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, a man was wounded, then he experienced a wet dream (i.e., became junub), so he was ordered to perform a ritual bath (ghusl). He performed the ritual bath and died. When this news reached the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he said: "They killed him, may Allah destroy them! Was not asking (about the matter) the cure for ignorance?" [أبو داود : 337 ، وسنده صحيح]
