Brief Explanation
Explanation: -

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu says that when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was praying and we greeted him with salam, he would respond to us. But when we returned from Najashi, we greeted him as before, yet he did not respond to us. Rather, after finishing the prayer, he said: "Indeed, there is engagement in prayer."

The meaning is that in prayer, a person is occupied with recitation (qira’ah), remembrance (dhikr), supplications (du‘a), and intimate conversation (munajat) with Allah, therefore it is not permissible to turn one’s attention to anything else except that which the Shari‘ah has permitted. The scholars say that if someone deliberately speaks to another during prayer, the prayer becomes invalid.
