Brief Explanation
Benefit: -
Sayyiduna Hani bin Yazid radi Allahu anhu narrates that when he came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam as part of a delegation from his tribe, the Prophet heard the people calling Hani by the title “Abu’l-Hakam.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called him and said: “Indeed, Allah alone is the Judge (Al-Hakam), and to Him alone judgment returns. Why have you adopted the kunyah (patronymic) Abu’l-Hakam?” He replied: “No, but the matter is that when there is a dispute among my people regarding something, they come to me, and I judge between them, and both parties are pleased with my decision.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “That is a good thing.” Then he asked: “How many sons do you have?” I replied: “Shurayh, Abdullah, Muslim, and Banu Hani.” He asked: “Who is the eldest among them?” I replied: “Shurayh.” He said: “Then you are Abu Shurayh.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplicated for him and for his sons. Similarly, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam heard some people calling one of their men by the name ‘Abd al-Hajar (slave of the stone), so he asked: “What is your name?” He replied: “‘Abd al-Hajar.” The Prophet said: “No, rather you are Abdullah (slave of Allah).” Shurayh narrates that when Sayyiduna Hani radi Allahu anhu was about to return to his homeland, he came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: “Tell me of a deed that will make Paradise obligatory for me.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Adopt good speech and the distribution of food.” [الادب المفرد : 811 ، صحيح]
